The knee is the heaviest and the best supported joint in the human body, unfortunately that does not always protect it from injury and pain. There are various times when a person finds himself as a patient seeking advice from his physician as to what sort of knee support brace he should wear until his knee pain has subsided. While support knee braces are useful in many cases, occasionally, a doctor might suggest that they do more harm than good if the wrong one is chosen, in which case, the physician can recommendation the correct one for his patient's knee pain treatment.

The knee is one of the favored joints for study by orthopedists due to the intricacies of the various ligaments, tendons, muscles and bones the comprise it. As  many important body parts that make up the knee itself, there are just as many injuries and causes of pain. Unlike with other joints, the complexity of the knee requires that these are all treated in slightly different manners. So while the doctor could prescribe a brace knee support for most injuries, the type he requests is vital to the full recovery of the patient. It is a choice that the patient should never make on his own. Many patients are unaware of the various types of knee support braces available. Depending on the injury the patient might find himself wearing one or two different ones during the various stages of recovery.

Injuries are often the cause of knee pain. These can manifest themselves as torn cartilage or a torn ligament – such as an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) tear. In either of these cases, a support braces for the knee might be useful. There are various types and depending on where the damage is done, the physician will recommend a different one. Some knee support braces have a hole for the knee cap. This alleviates pressure on the knee cap, and may be required if there is pain and swelling beneath the knee cap.

A doctor might not want the patient to wear the orthopedic product for too long since that could result in a wasting of the muscles surrounding the joint. If a time restraint is put on the patient for his treatment with a braces , that must strictly be followed. To further prevent wearing away of the surrounding muscle tissue, the physician could direct the patient to a physical therapist for rehabilitation exercises to either preserve or rebuild muscle. Following a knee injury, until full recovery has been reached and the knee is still weakened from convalescence, especially when engaged in sports activities, the patient might need to wear a knee brace support specifically designed for athletics. A physical therapist will know for certain whether or not the patient should wear one.

Knee injuries are a common occurrence, but the best means of recovery is for the patient to follow the advice of his doctor and physical therapist.
